I think there is a lot of material to cover in this episode. I also think that it will really wrap up the show completely and honestly and in a way nobody will expect.

I can't wait to see it all again on DVD. Also I hope that the DVDs will include the wonderful 2 hr special with BSG on the UN. I watched it on Real Media but I really would like to see it within the DVD.

I'm excited for tonight's episode.

Well finally the pain is over. Ron Moore what an A*S. The show should have ended on New Caprica what a joke ever since that point. Do people really think these were real characters Oh that's right people watch soap opera's too and think the lives those people lead are real exemples. At least the ships and the special effects were very well done, oh yeah that's right MooreRon had professionals do that part.

My first time on any blog. I hope it's ok to post as I haven't been part of your group so far.

It has been helpful reading all your comments which reassured me that I wasn't the only one who had questions about plot errors and nonsense. I thought I was missing the boat til I read your blog.

Re the finale:
good points: A very good space battle.
Kara's presence is resolved. She's an angel. And she and Anders will hook up again in another dimension.
As I love pigeons, the Kara pigeon was fine with me. In pigeon scene # 1, Lee tried to shoo the bird away, but she wasn't ready to leave Lee and the fleet til scene #2 in the finale.
Galen bumps off Tori.
Earlier good deal: Tori jettisons Callie. She was sooo annoying.

bad points: No answer as to why Roslin was so stuck on Hera.
Not nearly enough centurion scenes and development.
Pointless flashback of Lee with his brother and Kara. Wasted screen time.
Way too much wasted screen time with all the alcohol drinking scenes. Alcohol should have been banned from the series. Drinking scenes were very tedious and repetitious, taking away from real plot development. Alcohol has been this series' Hamburger Helper.
All these "filler" type scenes remind me of writers getting paid by the word.
Adama throwing up. We deserved better than that after buying the DVDs.
The structural integrity of the ship--it was a total jalopy that shouldn't have been able to do what it did in the finale, or even keep providing oxygen to the crew.
Why would the strike team take off their helmets once on the Colony?
Too risky.
Why would they send all the ships into the sun? Haven't they learned it's best to be prepared for any crisis?
That ridiculous opera house theme. I think they just thought it was a cool building that they got to film in for free. The whole recurrent "chasing Hera in the opera house" dream theme was pointless and unnecessary.
Sloppy religious mysticism. It substituted for well-thought out plotting.

Overall series flaws: Very different acting abilities among the characters. Some could act; some were amateurish.
What happened to Leoben who was obsessed with Kara?
Did I miss someone killing him?
What was the deal with Kara's piano player/father scene, and the song? What was her father?

I thought that Roslin was somehow going to be resurrected.
I wondered if it would be revealed that everybody was a Cylon.

Moreso, I deal in human decision making (I research it) both individually and in groups and there was absolutly NO logic in their decision to destroy the fleet.

I wish the last scene was a Raider coming in and blowing Hera away (on Earth)

The Kara harbinger of doom thing never panned out.
Gaius and Caprica Six? Seems that Gaius will just veg out on the farm after so much excitement, and they'll have a nice life. But Six will do all the work.
It was disturbing to see all the survivors dispersing on Earth, and know what they were going to do to the environment and the wildlife.
Earth deserves better.

Two characters that were too interesting to have kill off: Gaeta and Dualla. Both very good actors.

Good riddance: D'Anna, Callie, Tori. Very poor acting.

Best Christmas present: a raptor. Very cool little ships.

Foreboding preview: Caprica. It looks like it will be largely teen-love stories and mundane adult conflicts rather than good sci fi.

Ron Moore is insulting his audience by writing such a lazy, sloppily contrived plot ending.

It's like watching the last three Star Wars movies... only worse. The characters in Star Wars made stupid logical errors... Moore had his characters morph from one type of person to another with no real good explanations why... it just helped fill in the plot.

The sad part is I think the actors mostly did a good job. They were the only thing keeping this series afloat. Problem is the show is only as strong as its weakest link... which apparently is Ron Moore.

Anyway thanks for the blog... I think I'll sit out Caprica and BSG:The Plan like I sat out 'Enterprise'.

BUT WTF Ron!?!?! You left SOOO many questions unanswered!!!! What happened between Starbuck, Adama, and Anders that compelled the rescue mission of Hera? What was revealed there??? Was it "The Plan"? Is Hera's discovery on "earth" 150k years later the point??? Really??? We wanted more...a lot more and you failed in my assessment. Was EVERYONE a Cylon for that matter too??? Angels? C'mon man!!! Close the loop for me here. It's late - I had a great deal of anticipation going into tonight's show. I'll re-watch it in the AM and try to put the pieces together...again.

I saw absolutely no reason for the big Hera rescue operation. What was gained in getting her away from Cavil (other than her parents' wishes)?

Her musical notes plot device was already realized by Starbuck.

Cylon-human offspring were already possible. She would play no part in the survivors interbreeding.
Giving her 150,000 year old skeleton the status of Lucy made no sense.
We did learn that a hybrid lifespan is somewhere less than 150,000 years.

And what was up with Cap Six and Gaius being part of the opera scene with Hera? They really had nothing to do with her in reality.

It seems like Gaius has the same endless lifespan as Cylons. And he and Roslin were able to see the Cylon projections. Isn't it only Cylons that can see them?

Giving centurions their freedom? Not good. The paint-splattered ones might be ok, but the Cavil centurions were programmed to kill. That was another reason to keep the fleet ships on hand and the rockets loaded.

Most improved acting over the course of the series: Grace Park (Eight)

Most unpleasant scenes (besides Adama throwing up): babbling bald hybrids in hot tubs.

Most adept at sarcasm: Tigh ("yea, yea, you're forgiven for all your dark secrets," and Cavil ("Hey, I don't mean to rush you but there are two civilizations waiting on you.")

Second biggest human blunder (after Gaius on Caprica): Helo killing captive Cylons before they were near the resurrection hub.

Most bizarre acting style: Gaius.

Actor with the longest continuous acting career: Dean Stockwell, acting since age 9.

it is pretty late and i need to process what i have just seen. overall, great series. yeah it had its ups and downs. i feel that the end was good in that it brought everything back around, and connected it with us the viewers. wtf were cylons?? sure there are bound to be plot holes, i think you just have to let some of them go. how many Emmys and Peabody Awards have you won? frak, im done.

These are all great comments. Some stuff I had not thought about and it makes me want to go back and see the entire season . . . maybe wait a few months first. Thoughts I can add are:

There is enough to revisit making another mini-series with what is left. We didn't see Galactica blow up, and maybe Anders hooked up with the cylons, refurbished it, and is traveling around with them. They can come back and hook up with the "children of Galactica" who leave earth to rescue other humans stranded after the fall. It would explain why we haven't found a colonial fighter on earth. Another plot line could be understanding this other dimension of "angels" and what their purpose is. Are they part of the cycle? Perhaps they used to be like us but evolved into something else. Their story needs to be told! I say mini-series to avoid wondering plots that made me not watch seasons two and three.
So say we all.

I was very disappointed in the finale. Was Moore jealous of all the attention The Sopranos got for its last episode?

I had read online that the Big Explanation was that Daniel was still alive, sort of, as a ghost in the cylon machine, so to speak. This is why Kara (his daughter) had visions and such all her life, and why Baltar (his son(!)) had Head Six, and why Roslin (got cylon transfusion) had visions during jumps. He was directing everything via cylon projection.

This also ties in to the weird "he doesn't like to be called that" line in the final scene.

Of course, Kara disappearing is completely unsupportable without making some enormous assumptions. E.g. she's an angel, someone was able to make projection work on everyone else and she was really dead all along, etc.

Ditching their technology? Oh, please. Bring Cottle into that conversation--I bet he'd cast a dissenting vote.

The cylons had only 'one' resurrection ship and they didn't have the blue prints nor understood the technology? Does that really make ANY sense to anyone? Why would Cavel take the 5 original humanoid cylons and erase their memory and send them to live with humans without knowledge of the technology??

And Cylons and Humans mating... aren't the humanoid cylons inside actually flesh covered metal? Didn't we see that when Athena plugged herself into the BSG comm array and stopped a huge cylon attack force? Not to mention... they glow in their spinal cords when they have sex. What gives??

And Baltar had to create an elaborate cylon detector that needed a NUKE? Why not just make the crew walk through a simple metal detector???

Am I the only one who feels like I was told "Don't look at the man behind the curtain folks"?

And the list of problems with this series goes on and on. We all accept some problems with scifi movies/shows; it is expected not everything works perfectly. But BSG writers wanted you to vcheck your common sense at the door.

Remember when Anders was going to be operated on and the other original 5 cylons (sans Mrs. Tigh) were VERY eager to learn what Anders remembered. Then suddenly Mrs. Tigh comes back with all her memory intact and suddenly none of the others really seem interested anymore... it is like that whole part of the story which seemed interesting (to me) no longer was of interest and they decided to just remove that arc of the story. What kind of writer does builds up suspense like this and then simply 'forgets' it and tosses it out with the garbage.

To you constellation people:

The constellations in the Tomb of Athena were for the Cylon Earth. This is seperate from the Earth that Adama decided to name at the end of the series.

@npsguy: Humanoid Cylons are organic. You must have skipped seasons 1-4 to miss that, or you're about as dense as a log.

Reluctantly, on advice from President Roslin, Adama brings Sharon to CIC, where she cuts her arm open and connects herself to a fiber optic data line to communicate with Galactica's mainframe computer. On accessing the computer, she takes into her a portion of the logic bomb code, and then instructs Lieutenant Gaeta to wipe the system's hard drives to erase all Cylon virus traces. As the crew restarts the ship’s computers, a massive Cylon fighter force jumps into range, leaving Galactica defenseless. Sharon makes adjustments to the code and transmits the altered virus from Galactica to the Cylons, disabling the entire fleet of Cylon fighters (Flight of the Phoenix).

That was metal coming out of her arm. It looked similar to the metal/organic interior of the cylon raider that Starbuck hotwired, remember?

And tell me... how many 'organism' do you know that glow red in the spinal cord when doing the wild thing?

And to ask some more questions... the original Earth was a Cylon colony right? They were nuked... but by whom? Humans? From where, Kobol? Remember they said they found no human remains... just cylon and humanoid cylon on the version 1 of Earth. The original Earth was a cylon colony. So who attacked them? I was hoping Anders or Mrs Tigh would answer but it seemed no one cared after Anders lost his marbles.

And isn't it odd how Saul Tigh and Caprica 6... who were all lovey dovey just a few episodes ago end up not even talking to each other? After she lost the baby it was like they never had a relationship at all.

And what was the point of Caprica 6 being pregnant to begin with? It added NOTHING to the story line. That whole relationship made no sense. It was filler... just like most of the episodes of BSG.

Oh and Scott... the Constellations in the tomb matched the 'old Earth', right? But they also looked a LOT like the Constellations viewed from OUR Earth. Given that old Earth and new Earth are both many light years apart the Constellations should NOT look the same at all.

Oh and given that the Temple of Apollo was made over 155,000 years ago the new Earth's sky would not even look the same as now. The stars we see do move relative to one another and over that length of time the constellations no longer look the same.

Do any of you remember the voice over from the Original Galactica that mentions "Some say life here began out there." I like how they brought this back in and made it that the remnants of humanity were actually our ancestors. I kind of figured that this would figure in here somewhere. The way it ended made it seem like humanity still had not learned its lesson and we were on the brink of repeating the same mistakes that they made 150K years ago. Just be glad that they didn't end this with them showing up here present day 2009. That would have been unforgivable. We all remember the abortion that was Galactica 1980 don't we?

1. it's fun intellectual exercise and will blow over very soon
2. it's harmless
3. it might help future sci fi writers improve their craft

I think that the first, nuclear Earth was destroyed from within. The Cylons who lived there must have declared war on each other. They split into factions, like the humanoid Cylons. There was no attack from off planet.

I think that's what shook up D'Anna so much. She realized that Cylons were as flawed as her despised humans. It made her suicidal.

general--
After letting this series ending lie fallow for the past 24 hrs, the plot problems still haven't resolved and the writing remains flawed.
I still enjoyed the series, and hope that the message to love our Earth came through.

The question I had about Gaius and Six with Hera in the opera house--I guess that Six finding the kid and carrying her through a few corridors in the Colony ship constituted "saving" Hera. Lame.
The kid was like a slippery eel. She got away from everyone. They'll probably lose her in Africa too.

If Kara's father was a Cylon, maybe that's why her mother was so cranky. He drove her nuts with that song. And she hated Kara for being half Cylon. And was jealous of her for being her father's favorite.

I think the glowing spine during sex thing was just a little creepy shocker thing.
This series copied other films' cinematography (Adama flying Laura over African wildlife as in Out of Africa, etc) and shock moments (glowing Cylon spine and Species).
Passing our moon and approaching our Earth--same scene as the aliens in Independence Day approaching Earth.

Re Athena plugging in: their physiology is probably all organic, but with boosting of muscular power on the mitochondrial level. That would account for their super strength and endurance. Our bodies transmit chemical/electrical impulses via neurons, so the plug in impulses must have been converted somehow by Cylon juice.

But that puts into question Kara's status. If half Cylon, she should have been able to mop the floor with Lee in their boxing match.
She only excelled as a pilot.

Cavil keeping the final 5 in the dark: probably a control thing with him. He was paranoid and wanted to keep them under his thumb til they were needed.

Like the astronauts in 2001 not being told what their mission was til the critical time. By then, HAL had gone nuts and killed most of them as he was lied to.

The nuke that destroyed Cloud 9:
I agree with npsguy. Why the heck did Gaius need a nuke for his Cylon detector?

Hmmm, I forgot where I left my spare plasma cannon. I hate it when that happens.

Those final 5 Cylons functioned on a much higher intellectual level before they got activated. After they hooked up with each other, they really dumbed down.

The abrupt end of Tigh's and Six's romance: Six was just a substitute. Ellen was his true love and reclaimed him on her return. The pregnancy was just cheap dramatics filler.

Galen's transformation at the end was dramatic. He went from being the lead team player to a hermit on his own island, probably in the San Juan islands in Washington state.

Gaius was touching for the first time when he said, "I know about farming," and choked up.
As they were all talking about getting back to the land and farming, I assume they had an assortment of seeds to plant in their backpacks.

Kara and Anders meeting up after death reminded me of Bowman and HAL meeting up after their own destruction.

That might be the only way to resolve the plot mysteries of BSG--look to other films that have done a better job presenting their plot points.

two things i hated:
1) abandoning all technology and starting “fresh” - thus not passing on any lessons learned at all and dooming the future humans (that would be “us”) to repeat the same mistake. Given all their troubles (and their knowledge of what happened in the 13th colony), I would think they would be concerned about not repeating the cycle.

2) death of the skin jobs. After all the sacrifices of the rebel cylons, I would’ve wanted a better fate for them than to become extinct 150K years ago. Even the “bad” cyclons - Cavil and the rest - I thought demanded some sort of happy ending given that the writers put so much into developing their characters and showing how they became flawed and their wish for betterment. Seems like after all that time they put into making the “bad guys” more human and developing their characters, they just kill them all off anyways.

Greetings!

Well, I loved the finale. In my opinion, it was smart, witty, plenty of action, then concentrated itself on a "rest period" (perhaps like on the seventh day of the Creation...).

I watch the show because I enjoy the stories, the characters, the special effects and the cinematography. I watch it because I want to be entertained and be taken away from what I am normally doing for about an hour a week.

Indeed, one can analyse everything and their meaning. Personally, I love the "hint" of "Lucy" the mother of our civilization. But there are so many more things throughout the series that could be read into.

In my humble opinion, this finale will make people talk for years to come, as if they could do better. It is what it is - the story has been said and done. Who knowns, there are some wedged doors so a spin-off should never be ruled out. "All of this happen before..."

Now the only thing absolutely impossible is this: a married man in his 40s/50s, in an adult club, with his wife, having a great old time. It is just way too unbelievable... even for science fiction.

Thank you to the crew of the Battlestar Galactica and all involved for this beautiful journey.

Personally, I thought the final episode was just incredible - on every level. I loved the way they resolved the mysteries of the opera house, Starbuck's true nature/essence, and most especially, the incredibly moving earth scenes that wrapped things up at the end. I just can't think of a weak component. I was overwhelmed.

THere IS in fact a reason for why they burnt their technology in the sun. Lee said it, let's start anew and use our brains for anything but weapons and stuff that can only kill us. Let's use the heart instead. In fact, there is a lot of wisdom in that. Technology is good and brings humanity in progress but at some time it will kill us all. Take todays nukes. Imagine a day where nano-technology becomes daily routine or where starships can really reach light-speed with weapons that can obliterate planets. Someday humanity will obtain that technology. Knowing there will always be idiots who want to cry havoc upon others that is a bad thing... Everything powerful can and will be abused someday...

He spoke of "an island, off one of the northern continents... It's cold, it's up in the highlands".

There aren't that many islands with highlands he could mean, and "Highlands" is definitely a wink from the writers suggesting Scotland.

Of course, there's the small problem that 150,000 years ago Britain was part of the European mainland, but after we saw divinely-guided parallel evolution and the identification of a fossil as Mitochondrial Eve, who's to quibble over such details?

Gee there are a lot of dudes bitching about the endings while I thought a lot was explained. About the Roslin / Baltar etc cylon projection, if all this has happened before and will happen again, if Hera is the one where all humans are offsprings from, then it means al lot of us have at least some cylon DNA in us. As with all people, some are good in math, some are musicians, some are good cylon projectors... I think you should see it as that. Probably some folks carried cylon DNA all along. The real question is why Baltar never mentioned that using his cylon detector. He should have known about Saul Tigh and Ellen and Galen. Makes no sense he kept that for himelf.

About Roslin, well, even in this real world there are people who get visions when subjected to some drugs. Some are just illusions, others seem real. Like it or not, there are indeed those who can do foretelling with creepy amount of truth in it.

I personally wasn't too happy with the way Kara was played out. She didn't know what she was yet she vanished in thin air. On the other hand, she and Bill did ask Anders about what she was, about Hera and we never saw Anders' answer. We only know that when they came back Adama suddenly proposed this big risky rescue operation.

I found the special effects unlike anything ever seen in a TV series! The centurions of the original version looked mean instead of pussies as in the '78 version. They engage the newer models, that was awesome! The galactica jumping away from the cylon colony, then almost breaking in parts, awesome! PLates flying off, hull breaches, really cool!

Also, the music by Bear McCreary is stunning! It not only sounds bloody great but the compositions are sooo emotional! Love it!

Listen dudes, there are some things in life we can't explain but which are there all the same, as Baltar said it. This is also for our own life the case. Some things just happen as if there were something guiding it. RDM nicely put that aspect in the show. We don't know why but can't deny it's there. If even Cavil was convinced by it, then why not you huh? :-)

Not all of them will be because there were a little over 30.000 pure humans, we believe and even that is not certain. Given all this happened before and will happen again, it is considerable that those humans were in fact already in some way partly cylon from a previous cycle in history. That we'll never know but we cannot rule it our either...

It is also assumable that Six and Baltar, especially with their reputation have been banging one offspring after the other resulting in more cylon/human hybrids etc etc. The story really matches, it really does. You just have to think in cycles like history repeating itself... Isn't that tremendously cool? :-)

To all of you who dislike my criticisms let me quote the playwright Anton Checkov:

"If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there."

One of the big problems with BSG is that there were too many literary 'guns' put on the wall without any of them going off.

Not only that... but the characters acted inconsistent. For anyone that can't take that criticism and feel the need to attack me personally... learn to deal with it.

Even if they abandoned all technology and started over... they still had their memories and knowledge and there is no way they would have not passed some of that on to their children... while looking at the stars or talking about the earth being round and not flat, etc... and because of this, it wouldn't have taken 150,000 years for somebody to discover gravity or electricity or until 1492 to discover the earth is round...

Since Hera is the Eve of humanity on this planet, that means all of the other humans died off.

Common misconception, most people knew the Earth was round in 1492. People doubted Columbus because they believed, correctly, that his calculations for the size of the Earth were wrong and that he would starve before he ever made it to India.

the survivors fron the 12 colonials.,lives on the earth acroos a lot of diferrent places..asia,australia,europe,america....i think then the homo sapiens(combined human and cylon) arrives to the earth .next ...egiptians,machu-pichu,chinese civilitation,persia,..a lot of ancient civilitation

I finally saw the episode and it was terrible. Even the actions scenes were lacking. They blew through them so fast that you hardly had time to figure out what was going on.

But, let's look at some of the problems of the battle.

1. Galactica, at best, can only survive five more jumps. However, she can jump once and then take a pounding at point blank range. How any of her guns survived is a miracle. How the ship survived is a miracle.
2. Galactica can somehow survive ramming another vessel.
3. The Borg like shutting down of the defenses was a rip off of Star Trek.
4. Which leads to the line from Star Wars and the line from Aliens. Really, do we need to copy from every decent sci-fi franchise.
5. Other than another geek moment, why were the old centurions still around?
6. Was there only one raptor with nukes? If so what was it's purpose?

Really, a more sensible plan would have been to send a single civilian ship in with a nuke or two and detonate it right on top of the colony. It wouldn't have destroyed it but it would have wiped out the point defenses. Then Galactica pops in a minute or two later to let the battle begin. Or why not just pop in a couple of raptor to fire at a distance?

I thought the ending was great, save one point. I realize that Moore was trying to make all of us part Cylon with M-Eve, yet people did not leave Africa for parts unknown before 50,000 BCE. It would be another 40,000 years before farming shows up. I think it would have been better and made more logical sense had it been 8-10,000 ya. This would tie back to the original series that the Toltecs, Aztecs, Egyptians, etc came from "out there". Plus farming is only 10,000 years old. so we are to believe that the colonials descendants dumbed down for 140,000 years. Had this one point been different, it would also tie into many current fantasies (hypothosies of alien intervention) that we humans could not have built the higher ancient cultures without help.

Anyway, thats my only pet peave, except its over. Guess if thats all I've got to gripe about, I am doing pretty good.

Wow, after reading eveybody else, I realize the show was so frakking bad that it shouldn't have aired at all. LOL

Anyway, there are some really good points. Looks like Ron Moore's thinking everthing is settled is sooo bogus. He was just tired of it and wanted a new soap (Caprica).

Anyway, with all the unresolved issues, there certainly is room for a new mini series. Hey Ron, do you even pay attetion to this?

I still liked it, although, I think the story line could easily have been taken out longer. Although the final 5 stuff, at least at first was a ____. I'll let you hang, just like Ron boy.

Great series and a strong ending. I was a little disappointed at the way Starbuck's story line wrapped up, but other than that I was very happy with the ending.

This was always the strongest show on T.V. even at its weakest moments. It outstripped just about anything else on during its run (in my opinion) and I was always anxious to see the next episode.
