Friday, February 27, 2009Season 4.5: Someone to Watch Over MePRE-EPISODE THOUGHTS This is a George Gershwin song from 1926, and also a 1987 movie staring Tom Berenger and Mimi Rogers. 10:05 PM Tyrol is SHOCKED that Six wants to kill "Boomer" as punishment for treason. Didn't Bill Adama kill Gaeta and Zarek a few episodes ago? No one complained about that. Even more relevant, wasn't Tyrol part of the Star Chamber that executed people involved with aiding the Cylons? Will anyone act consistently in this series? 10:19 PM "Boomer" uses "Cylon projection" on Tyrol, and he doesn't like it. What the heck is "Cylon projection" and how come we never heard about it until now? And why is Tyrol even surprised by it? Isn't he Cylon now? 10:30 PM Tyrol lets "Boomer" do the "Cylon projection" think with him. Meanwhile, Starbuck is getting close with the piano player. I've been noticing glassware. Starbuck drinks from shot glasses. I hard drinker like Starbuck should be using a bigger glass to get drunk. There were a lot of ornate wine goblets in the cabinets in "Boomer's" "Cylon projection" house. 10:41 PM Tyrol has a brilliant idea. Replace "Boomer" with some random Number 8 that he abducts. They all look the same, so no one can tell the differnece, right? But somehow, the Cylons know each other. "Boomer" encounters another Number 8, whom she has to beat up and knock out because she has been recognized. I couldn't tell if she used super-Cylon strength to beat her up. Of course, they are both Cylons, and should both have super-Cylon strength, so that factor should even out. 11:00 PM There was three different sizes glasses on the table in the bar where Saul and Ellen were drinking. How come they never run out of booze? Are they distilling the stuff aboard the fleet? Even if they are, shouldn't the booze be white? Amber booze is aged in oak barrels, I doubt that they have a ship full of oak barrels with aging booze. Starbuck has been playing the Cylon song since she was a kid. And Hera drew the notes to the Cylon song. Before "Boomer" kidnapped her. Before kidnapping Hera, Boomer had wild Cylon sex with Helo. In the previews for next week, we see that Galactica is "dying" and we will learn some new secrets.
Comments:
The piano player was starting out with the original BSG theme when he said that is what he returned to when stuck. Of course I don't care anymore because the series has descended into absurdity. How many times can someone escape from the brig?
About the 'not having heard about cylon projection'
It goes back to when Baltar was on the baseship for the first time and him and 6 were walking through the hallway and she talked about how it wasnt a hallway for her due to the cylon projection, and it was a giant wooded forest hope that clears it up for you.
I agree completely. We only have 4 more shows and they waste this one with this frackin' crap. No action and they could have given us the message in HALF the time. So disappointed.
Okay, I'm trying to figure out why the folks over at IO9 gushing over this episode. I could barely keep interested. It was a typical BSG plot:
1. Kara is nuts: check 2. Roslin is insane: check 3. Everyone is in a dark mood: check 4. Lots of drinking: check 5. Someone escapes the brig: check 6. Adama makes a stupid decision: check 7. Lots of moody ambiance: check 8. Lack of logic: check Someone should develop a bingo game to play along at home. A drinking game would leave one passed out before the 30 minute mark. I'm gaining a new respect for Berman & Braga of Star Trek infamy. While they were obviously to bound to a certain ST "box", they did keep RDM in line. Right now you're seeing someone who hasn't been properly leashed.
Nice enough episode...for Season 3!!! We have four episodes, and we waste one on introducing a bunch of new nonsense?!?! I am so unimpressed and disappointed. This was such a cool show. Let's wrap this up so that it makes a little sense and keep the fans happy. Maybe we will buy the DVDs. Instead, they are spiraling about and putting out some crappy prequel.
BSG reminds me of getting with this girl from my high school. She started off geeky and I was not interested (think: the 1970s series). She got hot for a while in college. Some good times, rolling in the hay, having fun (think: miniseries and first couple seasons). Things got more serious and it turns out that she is nutty, and does not make a lick of sense (the last few seasons of BSG). Glad that BSG is over in three weeks and that my ex-girlfriend is my ex-girlfriend. There were some good times, but it is time to move on.
Cylon projection has been in the series for a very very very long time. That's why Cylons can live in such gray, drab creepy places, they always imagine they are somewhere else.
Also I thought the episode was pretty good... if F*NG hearbreaking! Would they stop with the tragedy already!?
I thought this episode was amazing. There doesn't have to be action every second, it is important to tie everything together emotionally as well. Is Starbuck's dad a cylon? maybe Daniel? We have a lot to figure out about Starbuck and her Cylon connection. This was a huge part of it.
As for Tyrol not caring when other people were killed and caring about boomer? He has always been in lvoe with her. He hated her for being a cylon and then found out he was one too. How could he not want to keep her alive in hopes of regaining what he lost? It wasn't just any old 8 boomer encountered and beat up, it was Athena. So she could steal Hera and take her back to Cavil. Brilliant. the betrayal, things coming together, it's all leading up to some awesome conclusions.
Cavil is the puppeteer pulling all the strings. His hatred of his makers is so deep that 2 thousand years hasn't tamped it down a bit. The humans are just ponds to be used to create his theater of psychological torture upon his creators. Starbuck is the offspring of Darrel, who was Mr. Piano Man in her projection. Yes she is a hybrid and resurrected to further the torture.
You guys need to open your eyes more. To start the poster has missed a few things... Boomer get seen by an 8....come on now, how long has an 8 been wearing that uniform? Athena man, how do you not know this after so long. Then there is projection...lightbulb yet?
Everyone wants action action action. The show isnt all about action, its drama suspence tragedy. Its about how your whole world gets taken from you but you refuse to give up, you move forward to the next step. Earth. But then you get there and there is no hope. So what happens now? Can you really pick yourself up and move on again to the unknown? Can you except that there are things out there you have to reach for even if you dont know what they are, where they are, or what they will lead to? The fleet has seen hell for years, then they reach hope and it isnt there. After wandering in space the toll is taking control, Gaeta's mutiny, the arming of civilians, Galactica's rotting innards. How much more can they take? Obviously Saul is slipping, after the death of his son you can see a difference in him. Always the drinker but he just isnt himself. Tyrol after seeing Boomer again realizes how much he loves her, which is why he helped rescue her. He knows Galactica inside and out, yea I am confused how he got Boomer free, but he managed to sneak from one side of the ship to the other and rip out the FTLs. Come on, the man knows that ship. Starbuck has lost it before, she is losing it again...the piano player was a manifestation of her father, some how she was manipulated just like the final 4 (not Ellen) into hearing that music. It will unlock itself just be patient. Why so suprised that everyone wants Boomer dead? Gaeta and Zarek lead a mutiny on Galactica, Zarek everyone hated... death by firing squad. Boomer is signed to Cylon jurisdiction, fought the civil war as Cavils patsy... death by however Cylons execute. It just seems like so many pessimistic posters here. The show has 3 episodes left, Moore has said before that he and the writers fill in the gaps. And the article I read says the Finale is 3 hours long. We have somethings we DO need to know; What is Starbuck? How did she come back with a new Viper? Where is the Daniel Ellen helped Cavil remake? How is Hera connected to Roslin? How is Hera connected to everything? What is the significance of the song (All Along the Watchtower cover by Bt4 Composed by Bear McCreary) What is going on with our girl? Is the Old Man going to abandon Galactica in the depths of space? And my big one...what the frak is Cavil up to? Just be open to the fillers, they lead to an end noone can expect, I guarantee it.
Another thing I don't understand...how can so many of you not know these peoples' names? Darrel?? They said DANIEL...thats not a tough one to catch. And confusing Athena for just an 8...time travelers? Wow people.
Maybe I am just more attentive to a show I love.
Cavil is the puppeteer pulling all the strings. His hatred of his makers is so deep that 2 thousand years hasn't tamped it down a bit.
Cavil has been alive less than 40 years. The humans are just ponds to be used to create his theater of psychological torture upon his creators. Pawns dude, it's pawns not places where you fish. Everyone wants action action action. The show isnt all about action,... No the show is soap opera drivel. RDM has just been making this up as he goes along and admits as much. It's soap opera writing. ...Zarek everyone hated... Actually, Zarek and Gaeta (ignoring the stupid webisodes) were the two most sensible people on the show. It's amazing to watch the hate spewed at him for making sensible claims. Just be open to the fillers, they lead to an end noone can expect, I guarantee it. Of course they will because RDM will pull them out of his posterior like everything else. For example, the whole Final Five thing was just a last minute decision. It wasn't thought through. It was just a "Wow, this would be great" type of thing. That's not good writing and it shows. Maybe I am just more attentive to a show I love. It's because the show has gotten so ludicrous that most people can't sit there watch with rapt attention something they know is just designed for shock value. Look at the mutiny episodes that came about because Adama commanded that Cylon tech be installed in the civilian fleet. The episode after the mutiny Adama doesn't want to use Cylon tech on Galactica and wants human crews. That is stupid writing. The reason a lot of people a irritated by the show is based on expectations. RDM led people to expect a fairly hard core sci-fi show based on the premise of humanity fleeing annihilation by machines. You got that (with some success) through about 1 1/2 seasons. After that though, the show has been circling the drain with mystic visions, absurd coincidences, shocking revelations, soap opera love triangles, poor logic, and ridiculous character personality shifts. How many times did RDM pull out the "Who is a Cylon" routine for the show? It was a one trick pony and he's still using it with "Who is Daniel?" I don't care about the answers any longer because the questions were stupid from the beginning.
I'm a casual fan. I've seen every episode, but I don't sit around all week reflecting on what it means to world. As for names, there are a lot of pretty major characters whose names I don't know. I think many people say Tyrol when my name for the guy is Chief.
I think the critics make some valid points. The first couple of seasons were filled with surprises. I often finished watching a show and thought, "That was pretty cool. I didn't see that coming." Even the slow episodes had good points. But something happened. Maybe it was me, not the show. I do know that I never found the political meetings, court proceedings, and media coverage very believable. There's like 50,000 people, right? I would think the politics and media would be similar to a small city of that population. Instead the events are all covered like some international mega-event concerning billions of people. I don't really blame the writers or producers. They have contractual obligations to fulfill and maybe sometimes they only need four episodes to tell a storyline but have ten episodes to deliver. So they create filler. The episodes I most liked were the ones like the one where the woman reporter was doing a documnetary, and afterward you find out she was a cylon. That's the kind of episode where you go "Whoa!" But now the "surprises" are getting kind of convoluted. There are still some good parts of the episodes, but it's just not as solidly good as it was.
Cylon projection went as far back as season 3. http://www.battlestargalactica-wiki.com/page/3.06+Torn?t=anon should jog the blogger's memory.
