Friday, October 27, 2006CollaboratorsNo one on the show, including Chief Tyrol himself, seems to remember that not too long ago Tyrol killed a human to save a Cylon, and somehow managed to avoid being executed for murder and treason.
Comments:
I have to say, I think you should change the name of your blog to "Crazy Right-wing Fruitbat Galactica Fan"
I think it suits you more
I Think that crazy, extremist left wing people should keep their offensive and unwanted opinions to themselves. Watch out, next we'll have some propoganda to deal with. GO HUG A TREE!
I second the motion to rename the blog to "Crazy Right-wing Fruitbat Galactica Fan"
All we need is 4 more votes in the special tribunal, lawyers need not apply.
Screw the left wingers, go the right wing. YAY for Roslin and her right wing policies! and BOO for stupid Zarek and his left wing adjenda...
lefty's can go find another blog if you don't like this one! PS. You won't find better though.
I think we should re-name it:
The only clear thinking blog on BSG. Left-wing nutcakes who hold onto Bush hate above all else can go elsewhere. The posts on this blog are, for the most part, reasonable and well-intentioned. Apparently some people prefer propoganda to thought, if these comments are any indication.
>I second the motion to rename the blog to "Crazy Right-wing Fruitbat Galactica Fan"<
Thirded. Though I don't want him shot into space, this is the funniest Galactica blog on the Web.
Very odd. Someone makes a legitimate criticism, couched in reasonable terms, and because it doesn't toe the far left Bush is evil and BSG is about nothing else line, the blogger gets verbal (so to speak) abuse over it.
And they claim the right is the one that is concerned with orthodoxy and correctness of thought.
First, what does commenting that Tyrol killed someone to protect a Cylon have to do with Left or Right politics? I thought it was a nice observation. Especially since I too missed it. Actually that would be Tyrol and Helo.
This episode, IMHO, is actually the best of the season so far. I was actually dreading it, but it was handled well. Tigh gets bonus points for trying to be fair while hating collaborators with a passion. Even though I think Rosalyn's solution would fail totally, it is something that has been attempted in the recent past (Rawanda for instance). I thought Zarek came out the best of any of the characters in this episode. He was willing to step out of his presidential role. Yes, it was probably untenable in the long run, but he could of easily divided the fleet on the issue. He was also imprisoned, so he wasn't tainted by Baltar's administration. Second, he actually showed a lot more political and social understanding than either Adama or Rosalyn. Rosalyn proved his point by choosing a completely different option in issuing pardons. BTW, does the pardon extend to Baltar? Personally, I think in this situation, a mass pardon would fail miserably. With cramped quarters and no place to "move away," the collaborators will eventually suffer from "accidents." Does anyone think that someone announcing to a truth commission, "Yeah, I turned in Bill's brother over here for an extra ration" is actually going to make things better? There is no justice in that. Zarek's solution was actually an attempt to balance the people's need for justice, the need to resolve the matter quickly, and the need to provide some protection to the accused. I thought the writers stacked the deck to some extent by not having one person act as an advocated for the accused in absentia. In general though, I thought his solution was far better. Zarek for president.
Yeah, it'd never work. Because its not like they had truth and reconciliation commissions in South Africa after the fall of apartheid to stop the newly enfranchised majority from lynching the whites or anything. And it's not like they have actually been quite successful or anything. And its not like the writers aren't quite blatantly basing Roslin's model on that.
Oh wait, they DID set them up and they HAVE been quite effective. Never let the facts get in the way of justifying summary executions, though.
Guy, did you read and comprehend my comment? For instance, my statement of Even though I think Rosalyn's solution would fail totally, it is something that has been attempted in the recent past (Rawanda for instance).
South Africa is a great example of how it hasn't worked. Whites are leaving South Africa in droves. Around 1600 white farmers have been murdered in the past few years. The country is quickly turning into another dysfunctional African state. I don't know how well the ones in Rwanda have worked. However, as I pointed out, you can actually move to another part of the country. It's hard to escape in a collection of space vessels unless you want to put all of the collaborators on one or two ships. Never let the facts get in the way of justifying summary executions, though. So your solution is what? As Zarek aptly stated, public trials would quickly turn into a circus and divided the fleet. Rosalyn admitted as much by going the pardon route. I never said it wasn't a legitimate solution. I just don't think it will work based on the circumstances and the one example you provided showed that it hasn't worked. BTW, they aren't summary executions. There was a process involved. From Wikipedia: A summary execution is a type of extrajudicial punishment in which an accused or reported suspect of criminal activity is killed, often at the time and place of their being discovered. Because some summary executions occur without any meaningful inquiry or investigation, they are often considered illegal, and therefore acts of murder. They may, in rare cases, be more acceptable under extreme circumstances, such as in a war zone, or a similar context of profound instability where the criminal justice system is non-functioning, or otherwise too overwhelmed to deal with a widescale breakdown in government. If you think the punishment was summary, then you have to explain how Zarek is wrong that (1) they are in a war zone, (2) having trials would end up swamping the court system, and (3) there is profound instability or trials would create such instability. Also, if Zarek is so out of bounds, shouldn't he be hauled before a court, as well as the others, and tried for murder?
3 years on, the Cylons sure appear to be in a quagmire with their war based on lies on the peaceful humans.
Post a Comment
Hopefully the rightwing Cylons will be voted out of office and the leftwingers will force those responsible for starting the war against humanity to face justice.
