Friday, February 03, 2006Liveblogging Scar9:24 My second attempt at liveblogging. So why is the episode called "Scar"? Will we be introduced to a new character with a scar? Will Starbuck get wounded and have a big disfiguring scar? 10:09 I can't figure out what this episode is about. Except now I knew who/what Scar is: a Cylon ace. Why is the fleet still hanging around wherever they are if there are Cylons there? This makes no sense. 10:23 Ah, so the reason the Cylons aren't attacking en masse is because the Resurrection Ship was taken out and they don't want to die. It's interesting to learn that the Raider Cylons get resurrected just like the ones who look like humans. But from a scientific perspective, it makes no sense. I think that Kat's alot cuter than Starbuck. 10:36 If Starbuck and Kat got into a fight, Starbuck would win. She's bigger and she lifts weights. Last post, I wondered why Apollo had to go see a prostitute because he gets plenty of free sex. But then after seeing what a PITA Starbuck is, maybe it was worth Apollo's money to have sex with the prostitute. 10:47 That fight almost happened! Kat looked to be a scrappy fighter, but I think that if the fight continued Starbuck would have kicked her ass. Too bad Apollo had to walk in and ruin the fun. 10:57 SO SAY WE ALL! I wonder if Starbuck is ever going to see that Anders guy again? 10:59 It looks like next week we will return to the arc about the Cylon sympathizers.
Comments:
This episode was not as bad as last weeks but where did this drinking problem with Starbuch come from and why is she just now losing her mind over Anders? We saw very little of this before and it just seems to really upset her out of now where. Kind of like last week when Apollo gets upset over the chick he left behind on Caprica. It all seems do dang contrived to me.
I think the Scar cylon raider was pretty cool and I gotta admit I was hoping he would survive this to come back and torment the pilots some more. Kinds of sucks he died.
Thought this one was an awesome episode. Thought the fx were amazing.
Think Starbuck has always been a bot of a lush. Thought it was interesting how Cat played Starbuck to Starbuck's Tigh. Also liked the way they resisted to temptation to have Starbuck shoot down Scar and how Starbuck HATED IT. Agree though that the Anders obsession cam out of nowhere.
By the way....Cat better looking than Starbuck?? THINK NOT!
Not that Starbuck is all that gorgeous to begin with.
Yes, Cat is cuter than Starbuck, her face is much more expressive. But Starbuck clearly has a nicer body.
Moving on. A couple of things started bothering me in this episode. First, the plotline of an "enemy ace fighter" seems kind of borrowed from an early 90's series on Fox called "Space: Above and Beyond." One of those episodes featured an ace fighter who painted a Jolly Roger on its tailfin with the caption Abandon All Hope. That series had its share of clunker plotlines and bad premises, with much greater promise in its last three or four episodes before it got cancelled. The denouement of that series, which was based on an alien race attacking a far-off human colony, came when a captured alien revealed that the UN one-world Earth government had been warned not to colonize a planet that was considered hallowed ground. UN Earth Gov sent unsuspecting colonists in anyway, as a provocation for war. Not relevant to this blog, but I just had to write it out, that last plotline was the surprise left hook of the series. Second, aren't there any older Viper jocks on Galactica? I mean, aside from Tighe and Adama, every Viper pilot appears to be in the 19-to-35 range. Although the argument could be made that older pilots were killed in the attack on Caprica, including senior staff, I would still think that we would see some 40ish dudes or dudettes with salt-and-pepper locks as Viper instructors. Or do they just have them euthanized while they watch recorded nature scenes on a monitor like in Soylent Green?
Just as the U.S. military doesn't have many older people around on combat ships, I imagine the same thing for the Colonial Fleet.
Apparently, the highest level officer who flies Vipers is a Captain, a relatively low rank.
One quick note... Just because we don't see it going on, doesn't mean it's not happening. While this show is completely character driven, if they took the time to touch on every character's problem as it's occurance began, the show wouldn't move. With the number of main characters and major minor characters, the show simply souldn't work. The fact that we're getting a look into the minds of Lee and Cara, into problems that we've not seen before, is not a big deal, in fact, I think it helps us to remember that there is a lot more going on than we do see on screen.
I don't know if anyone agrees, but is anyone feeling the new episodes so far? I've been perplexed at the non-engrossing plot lines so far. There haven't been any major battles. There are "Lost" like silly flashbacks (Starbuck). The silly "Scar" episode didn't lead to anything! How are these shows tying us in to the grand scheme of things. I don't know, but almost every show has been...disappointing. It seems like the writers or producers just got on the bandwagon, like they weren't part of the old show. Does anyone know if the general writers or creators or producers are new?? What's going on with BSG????
