Sunday, January 01, 2006Pegasus againThe new season of Battlestar Galactica starts this Friday, so in preparation I rewatched the Pegasus episode to refamiliarize myself with where the last season left off. Once again, I wonder what the hell Roslyn is doing in this episode. As President, doesn't she have the authority to say who the head military person is? Well maybe not, otherwise she might have fired Adama a long time ago. In fact, as we've seen, Adama ignores her and does his own thing when circumstances call for it. And then I found myself wondering if Admiral Cain really shot and killed her XO on the bridge. If you recall, the Pegasus' XO told Colonel Tigh this story, and then he said he was just kidding. I predict that there will be a fight between the two forces, but because the Galactica's personnel are free thinking they will defeat the forces of the Pegaus which rely on a strict top down military regimen and are unable to adopt quickly. What will happen to the Pegaus and its Vipers? In the original series, the Galactica acquired the Pegasus' Vipers, but the Peagsus itself was lost going head to head against three Cylon base stars.

UK gets series 2 any day now... swine, we got series 1 first! Not fair...
In a case such as this martial law would be in effect and thus the military would be in charge. Their authority takes effect under emergency powers. Their duty foremost is to protect the people and in a time of disaster cannot afford to be in disarray. Actually the military doesn't have to recognize her as the population is still in danger due to an outside thre
If this were the United States, Roslyn would be Commander In Chief. However, it is not clear from the show whether that's her actual role here.
Although if it is she's done a poor job of exerting herself. Possibly we'll see her do that tonight.
You are all missing the point. Roslin accurately suspects that if she relieved Cain, then Cain would ignore the order, which would undermine her authority across the fleet. If someone in the high position of an admiral won't recognize the president's legitimate authority, then others will follow.
Of course, it would have been nice if the script pointed this out.
It was gratifying to see Ron Moore's confirmation of my argument above in his recent blog post.

"Some confusion out there about why Roslin didn't simply promote Adama over Cain at the start of all the trouble or try to relieve the wacky admiral herself. My reasoning was that Cain would never accept it, especially since her acquiesence to Laura's authority as president was shaky at best. Laura should be smart enough to know that Cain wasn't the kind of person who could be taken down by a legalism and so she shouldn't give an order that she knows will be disobeyed, thereby undercutting her own position as president. There used to be a line to that effect in the script, but it got cut over the course of the rewrites."
