Sunday, July 31, 2005FraggedWhat does “fragged” mean anyway? It’s most unfortunate that I had to miss last week’s episode on account of having no cable TV, but now my cable and my Tivo are working again. I didn’t seem to miss much last week, because Commander Adama is still unconscious in sickbay, the landing party is still on Kobol, and Laura Roslin is still in the brig. But Starbuck and Helo are nowhere to be seen. Neither is Sharon. As previously predicted, Lee “Apollo” Adama comes out of this smelling like a rose. He’s out of the brig and back doing his job. And talking about Apollo, the real Apollo, Richard Hatch, makes another appearance in this episode. His presence warns us that there’s going to be a lot more political stuff going on in the next few episodes. The quorum of twelve was also a pain in the ass in the classic original Battlestar Galactica. Number Six doesn’t seem to look as good as she did last season. I think it’s because Tricia Helfer lost some weight, losing some of her lovely feminine curves in the process. Someone needs to buy her a few Big Macs. Commander Adama will probably be in sickbay a few more episodes because the writers seem to enjoy putting Colonel Tigh in the spotlight. Tigh had to declare martial law at the end of the episode, which was the right thing to do given that Laura Roslin is a nutcase and the rest of the quorum are making pains of themselves. But unfortunately, it’s easy to predict that Roslin will turn out to be right, and that Starbuck will bring that Arrow back and it will help them find the way to Earth. I say unfortunately because I can’t stand Roslin's character. Monday, July 18, 2005ScatteredAs I predicted in my last post, Commander Adama survived, and Lee Adama managed to weasel out of being in the brig. I was wrong about the Number Six that Baltar saw on Kobol being real; she was just a normal hallucination. I still predict that Baltar will switch sides like he did in the original series, but as a commenter pointed out, this will make his character less interesting. The original series had that problem. See my post What does Baltar do all day in that dark room? “Starbuck” is stranded on Caprica. Even if she can steal a Cylon Raider, she doesn’t know the jump coordinates to find the fleet. Yet I predict that somehow, beyond all possibility and logic, Kara will return to the fleet with the Arrow. A commenter suggested that the Cylons don’t truly want to destroy the last humans, because they have other plans for them. But don’t they Cylons always try to destroy the fleet everytime they get in range? Well this is actually not clear. One could argue that they only want to destroy the Galactica; once the last military ship is gone they can have their way with the rest of humanity. I think I liked the old Cylons better, all they wanted to do was kill everyone. * * * The new Galactica is starting to grow on me. I like this show. I like it more than any of the various new Star Trek shows. But it’s just unfortunate that it’s called “Battlestar Galactica” because it has very little to do with the old Galactica. It was just a marketing gimmick to get people to watch the show. * * * I am in the process of moving from Northern Virginia to Manhattan, and I doubt that I will have cable TV this Friday. This may, very sadly, mean that I will have to miss next week’s episode. This would be a horrible tragedy because then I’d lose track of the entire series.
